Elon Musk
Senior Advisor to the President
Elon Reeve Musk was born in June 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa. He moved to Canada after attending the University of Pretoria to avoid mandatory military service and involvement in apartheid. After attending Queen’s University in Ontario, Musk transferred to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, from which he graduated with a bachelor of arts in physics and a bachelor of science in economics.
Musk interned in Silicon Valley, then created a web software company and worked as a coder. He founded an online financial and payment company that later merged with the parent company of PayPal. Musk was involved with the Mars Society and started a company to produce affordable rockets for space exploration. SpaceX received a NASA contract in 2009 for Dragon space flights to replace shuttles to the International Space Station. Musk developed the Starlink low Earth orbit satellites under SpaceX for internet access coverage.
After investing in Tesla Motors, he became an active participant in design and then became CEO of the company. He resigned as chairman of the board but remained CEO after settling an SEC lawsuit regarding his statements about funding. Musk also co-founded Neuralink, a neurotech company that seeks to integrate artificial intelligence into the human brain. The FDA has approved human trials for the technology.
Musk has been part of the development of tunnels for transportation, vactrain, and artificial intelligence research, such as OpenAI and xAI.
Musk bought Twitter in October 2022 and immediately downsized its workforce. Musk became Senior Advisor to the President upon President Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. He has overseen the audits of federal departments and agencies by the U.S. DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) Service.

In the News…
Senior Advisor to the President Elon Musk appeared for an interview with seven other executives involved in the DOGE effort. The officials spoke about the redundant and outdated systems and technology in the government that they have uncovered and are working to streamline and upgrade, as well as wasteful policies and procedures they are seeking to eliminate.
One instance of ending fraud was changing policy to have seniors physically visit Social Security offices in order to update banking information or make account changes. DOGE personnel found that 40 percent of the phone calls being made to the Social Security Administration were fraudulent attempts to divert funds into other accounts than the legitimate recipient.
Musk spoke specifically of the elimination of fraud in the Social Security Administration, saying, “What we’re doing will help their benefits. Legitimate people, as a result of the work of DOGE, will receive more Social Security, not less. I want to emphasize that, as a result of the work of DOGE, legitimate recipients of Social Security will receive more money, not less money.”
Of the overall effort to make the government more efficient and reduce waste, Musk said, “The reason we’re doing this is because if we don’t do it, America is going to go insolvent and go bankrupt, and nobody’s going to get anything.”
He stated, “I worry generally about the strength of America. America is the central column that holds up all of Western civilization… If that column fails, it’s all over. You can’t run off to New Zealand or some other place. It’s over. So either we strengthen that column and make sure America is strong, and we’ll be strong for a long time, or that roof’s coming down.”
